Should I use a Footmuff in a Carrycot

One of the most common questions we’re asked is whether you can (or should) use a footmuff with the carrycot section of your pram. It’s an understandable question — you want your baby to be warm, comfortable, and safe on every walk.

There are really two things to think about here:

  1. Comfort for your baby, and
  2. Whether the footmuff will fit properly inside the carrycot.

Fitting a Footmuff in the Carrycot

Our bestselling Baa Baby Original Footmuff is pictured here in the Bugaboo Fox 5. It’s a snug fit inside the carrycot but does work well — the Fox 5 is one of the more spacious bassinets, making it one of the better options for this setup.

Are Footmuffs Designed for Carrycots?

In most cases, footmuffs aren’t designed to fit in carrycots. They’re made for the pushchair or stroller seat and usually used from around 4–6 months onwards, once your baby has outgrown the lie-flat stage.

Because carrycots are smaller and shallower, a full-size footmuff often doesn’t fit neatly. It can feel tight or crumpled, which means your baby might not lie comfortably.

We’ve tested our range of sheepskin footmuffs in a variety of carrycots — including the Bugaboo Fox and Cybex Priam. In both cases, the footmuff needed a little tucking around the top to sit snugly. It’s possible to make it work, but it’s not always ideal.

If you’re searching for a footmuff for Bugaboo Fox or a Cybex Priam compatible footmuff, it’s worth remembering that these are designed mainly for the seat unit, not the carrycot.

How our Footmuffs fit in Different Carrycots

Shown here in the Cybex Priam, our popular Baa Baby Original Footmuff provides a cosy and secure fit in the carrycot. The Priam’s sleek design means the fit is a little more snug than with some larger bassinets, but it still works well for added warmth and comfort.

Can You Use Just the Bottom Layer of a Footmuff in the Carrycot?

Yes — and this can be a great solution.

Both the Fellhof Classic footmuff and the Baa Baby Original footmuff can be used with just the bottom layer inside the carrycot. Because these models lie completely flat, they can double up as a soft, cosy layer under your baby.

However, the Baa Baby Luxe footmuff isn’t suitable for the carrycot. It has a structured seat shape that’s designed for the pram seat rather than a flat bassinet.

How the Fellhof Classic Footmuff Fits in a Bassinet

Shown here in the Bugaboo Fox Bassinet, the Fellhof Classic Footmuff offers a cosy and comfortable fit in the carrycot. Its lighter weight and flexible, supple outer make it a particularly good option for smaller bassinets, allowing it to sit neatly without bunching while still keeping your baby warm and snug.

The Best Alternative: A Sheepskin Carrycot or Bassinet Liner

If you’re looking for a warm, breathable layer for your newborn, the best choice is a sheepskin carrycot liner or bassinet liner rather than a full footmuff.

Our carrycot pram liners are made from a single layer of natural sheepskin (not stitching or seams) with a soft leather backing. The standard bassinet size (70 x 30 cm) fits neatly on top of your carrycot mattress, creating a smooth, safe, and perfectly fitted layer for your baby to lie on.

A carrycot liner offers many of the same benefits as a sheepskin footmuff without the tight fit :

  • Natural temperature regulation — sheepskin keeps your baby warm in winter and cool in summer.
  • Breathability — helps prevent overheating and wicks away moisture.
  • Perfect fit — no bunching or tightness inside the carrycot.

Will a Footmuff Be Too Hot for the Carrycot?

It’s a common concern — but remember, sheepskin is naturally thermostatic. It helps to regulate your baby’s temperature by trapping air within the fibres, keeping your little one warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s warm.

However, you should always:

  • Avoid adding too many extra layers.
  • Never crush a footmuff into a tight carrycot — it reduces airflow and can
  • cause overheating.
  • Check your baby regularly to make sure they’re not too warm.

The Bottom Line

If you really want to use a footmuff in your carrycot, it’s possible — but only with the right combination of pram and footmuff. In most cases, a flat sheepskin liner is the safest and most practical option.

Once your baby is around 4–6 months and ready to move into the pushchair seat, that’s the perfect time to start using your sheepskin footmuff for cosy autumn and winter walks.

So while a footmuff can work in some carrycots, a sheepskin carrycot liner is usually the better choice — giving you warmth, breathability, and a perfect fit from day one.
